There have been some incredible batsmen to come out of South Africa over the years. But who are the best of the best?

In this article, we celebrate some of the greatest batsmen to ever play for South Africa by ranking them in order of greatness. These men have made their mark not only in South African cricket but also on the global stage. So without further ado, let’s get started!

Jacques Kallis: A Cricketing Great

Jacques Kallis is one of the most celebrated batsmen in the history of cricket. Regarded as one of the all-time greats, he is the only player to score a century in both test and one-day cricket. He retired from international cricket in 2014 with an astonishing haul of numbers: 11,174 Test runs at an average of 55.37, including 45 centuries; 273 One Day International runs at an average of 44.36; and 577 catches and 149 stumpings in Tests and ODIs combined.

Kallis was also known for his ability as an all-rounder, to contribute with the ball, taking 292 wickets in Tests and 273 in ODIs. He scored centuries in both Tests and ODIs, with the highest ODI score of 139. Kallis was a master of defensive batting, using impeccable technique and a strong temperament to stonewall the opposition bowlers. He was the lynchpin of the South African batting lineup for many years and was known for his immense concentration and ability to bat long innings.

During his long career, Kallis suffered from many injuries, but such was his dedication that he almost always played through it. He was unmatched as an all-rounder and was an integral part of the Proteas for many years. Kallis is, unarguably, one of the greatest batsmen South Africa has ever produced. He was awarded South African player of the year in 2002 and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2014. He was also named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2013 and was the first cricketer to be inducted as a national hero in South Africa.

AB De Villiers: Superstar of South African Cricket

AB De Villiers is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen to have ever played for South Africa. He made his debut in 2004 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting players in world cricket.

He scored 8,765 runs in 114 tests at an average of 50.66, making him the second-highest run-scorer for his country in the format. His skill on the off-side, particularly his ability to hit the ball over the boundary, was remarkable to watch. He was also known for his incredible reflexes behind the stumps, resulting in him becoming one of the most dangerous wicket-keeper batsmen in the world.

Not just in tests, De Villiers’ impact in one-day internationals (ODI) was unparalleled. He scored 9,577 runs in 228 matches at an astonishing average of 53.5, leaving all other batsmen behind. His aggressive approach and fearless attitude towards batting made him a fan favourite. He is also the holder of the world record of the fastest ODI hundred, taking just 31 balls to reach the milestone.

In addition to his batting abilities, De Villiers was also a part of some of the most successful South African teams in the history of the sport. His role in South Africa’s historic first series win against Australia in 2012, and their eventual World Cup victory in 2015 was prominent.

He brought to South African cricket an unbridled energy and passion that no other cricketer could match. He was an inspiration to many upcoming cricketers, motivating them to make their dreams come true. His legacy lives on in the current generation of South African cricketers, who look to emulate his successes. De Villiers will always remain one of the greatest batsmen to have ever graced the game.

Known for his aggressive batting style and innovative shots, De Villiers was a key player in South Africa’s success in both Test and One Day International cricket. He retired from international cricket in 2018 after scoring over 20,000 runs.

Hashim Amla: An Innings of Grace and Consistency

During his 14-year professional career, Amla scored over 20,000 runs and was an integral part of the South African cricket team.

Amla’s innings have come to be known for their grace and beauty as well as their consistent reliability. He has achieved many notable records, including being the fastest South African to reach 10 centuries in Test matches, as well as the first player from his country to score a triple century in Tests.

His remarkable technical ability has enabled him to achieve success both domestically and internationally, making him an invaluable addition to South Africa’s batting lineup. Amla remains a hero amongst cricketing fans around the world and is sure to be remembered for years to come.

Graeme Smith: Captain Courageous

Last but certainly not least, we have Graeme Smith, who is widely considered to be the most successful captain in South African cricket history. Smith is known for his leadership, determination and resilience, having led the Proteas to series wins over every other test-playing nation. Under his stewardship, South Africa reached the No.1 ranking in both Tests and ODI. He was also a reliable batsman, racking up 9265 runs at an average of 37.98 during his 15-year career.
