A Comprehensive New Hire Training Checklist to Simplify Onboarding

A new hire’s first job day can be overwhelming. From filling out paperwork to getting acquainted with company culture, there is much to do.

Streamline the process with a digital onboarding checklist. It can be individualized to each role and include tasks like: -Creating a training plan.

Create a Training Plan

When new hires come on board, a well-defined training plan ensures they’re ready to start their role and get up to speed quickly. Training may include various things, from completing a timesheet to learning about workplace policies and procedures. A training plan can be a digital document, a video on your workplace communication app or even an at-a-glance checklist. A training plan that includes specific and measurable objectives is also helpful, so employees can easily see what they need to do to succeed.

A clear training path can be particularly important for remote workers, who might need a physical office to visit. A well-defined training plan can guide them to make it as easy as possible for them to get up-to-speed with the help of their team members.

As with any process, frequently reviewing and updating your training plan is important. When you have a central, updated list of training available to all stakeholders, it’s easier to identify any gaps or deficiencies in your program and correct them before the onboarding process starts.

Identify Training Needs

Identifying training needs is an important part of the onboarding process. It gives managers a clear view of their employees’ needs to perform the job well and achieve company goals. This information can then be used to develop and deliver effective training.

For example, you may find that some employees need more information about the company’s policies or procedures. This type of training could be delivered through a classroom-based course or online. Alternatively, other employees might need more hands-on experience performing certain tasks. This type of training could be provided through an apprenticeship or mentorship program.

You can also use the results of a training needs assessment to measure the effectiveness of existing training and identify what additional training is required. This can help you improve employee performance and make the business more efficient.

While some elements of new hire onboarding are less exciting than others (like filling out forms, completing cybersecurity training, and figuring out where to park), these steps can be crucial to creating a strong foundation for your new employees. And once you’ve got that in place, it’s easier to focus on the things that matter to your new employees, such as having purposeful work and feeling like they belong at their new company. By creating a clear and consistent training plan, you’ll be on your way to improving engagement and boosting retention.

Schedule Training

Your new hire training checklist should include the specific tasks for your employee to complete and what date they should be completed. For example, if you want them to sign up for a course on the first day of work, you would add it to the list with a starting date and the person’s staff number and name. This makes it easy for your Training Administration team to get them all signed up and ready to go when they start.

It’s also important to have a timeline for how your new hire will take the hire to integrate into their role fully. This will help you schedule meetings with them to address any questions or concerns they may have and allow you to see if there are any areas where extra support is needed.

One of the best ways to ensure you’re onboarding your employees effectively is to set them up with a mentor who can guide them through the process. Having someone to answer their questions and provide guidance can make all the difference in an employee’s first few months on the job.

A comprehensive onboarding program can significantly impact the success of your employees and the company’s bottom line. A new hire training checklist ensures that all the necessary steps are taken to make employees feel valued and integrated into the organization.

Track Training

A clear and comprehensive onboarding process can help new hires succeed. And it can also give managers and HR professionals peace of mind that all the elements needed are in place.

However, putting an effective onboarding plan in place can be challenging, especially for small businesses or organizations that don’t have the luxury of having dedicated teams focused solely on onboarding and training. And, even for those with dedicated teams and processes in place, balancing peaks and troughs of hiring can make it difficult to ensure the onboarding process is always running smoothly.

The best way to ensure training is delivered as planned is to track it. Training tracker lets you log all the training your employees receive, from internal courses and LMS/computer-based training to toolbox talks and on-the-job experience, as well as licenses, certifications, and tests. You can then run reports to see which employees have completed their required training and those who need to refresh their skills, such as retraining for forklift operations or working in confined spaces.

While orientation gives new hires a high-level overview of the company, culture and team structure, onboarding dives into the details of their role. And while an effective onboarding process can take up to a year, it’s important to check in regularly and see what areas need improvement.
